There's an old saying in mountain biking: "Your knees never really heal." Every rider who has unexpectedly hit the ground knows there's some truth to it. Whether you're charging your local singletrack after work, pushing your limits in the bike park, or lining up for an enduro race, crashes can happen to anyone. Good MTB protection isn't a sign of fear—it's a sign of experience.
Since 1979, iXS has been developing protective equipment for two-wheel enthusiasts. The result is a comprehensive range of pads and protectors designed to suit every riding style, skill level, and rider profile.
In this guide, you'll learn what really matters when choosing MTB protection—and which iXS products are right for your riding.

Which Protectors Do I Need for Mountain Biking?
The answer depends largely on how and where you ride. As a general guideline:
- Trail / All-Mountain: Knee pads are essential, Elbow pads recommended, Body armour optional
- Enduro: Knee pads, Elbow pads, Lightweight body armour
- Downhill / Bike Park: Full protection - knee pads, elbow pads, upper-body protector with a level 2 back protector
If you're in doubt, err on the side of more protection. The best protectors are the ones you barely notice—and therefore keep wearing.
What's the Difference Between Soft and Hard Protectors?
Modern MTB protectors typically rely on two different protection concepts. Flexible materials such as iXS X-Matter and Hex-Cell Impact Cell Technology adapt naturally to the body and deliver outstanding comfort while pedalling. Compared to hard-shell protectors, they are, lighter, more breathable, more flexible
X-Matter remains soft and flexible while riding but stiffens momentarily upon impact. This allows it to absorb impact energy while maintaining exceptional comfort and freedom of movement. Even after multiple impacts, it retains its protective properties.
Hex-Cell protects through interconnected hexagonal impact cells. Upon impact, the cells deform, absorb energy, and distribute forces across a larger surface area.
Hard-shell protectors provide maximum mechanical protection and excel against sharp rocks, roots, and hard edges.
They are particularly suited for:
• Aggressive downhill riding
• Bike park laps
During a crash, the shell slides over the ground, helping reduce friction and spread impact forces over a larger area.
What Do CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 Mean?
CE Level 1 and Level 2 describe the impact protection performance of protectors according to European EN standards.
They indicate how much residual impact force is transmitted to the body.
Level 1
- Allows higher residual force transmission
- Lighter and more flexible
- Ideal for Trail and Enduro riding
Level 2
- Transmits significantly less residual force
- Provides a higher level of protection
- Recommended for Downhill and aggressive riding

Protective gear for children – what should you bear in mind?
Protective gear for children – what should you bear in mind?
Children’s bodies are proportioned differently to adults’ – so a simply scaled-down adult model isn’t enough. iXS develops knee and elbow pads, as well as upper-body protectors, specifically for young riders, with a tailored fit and high levels of comfort, so that they’ll actually be worn both in everyday life and on the trail. Pads with adjustable straps also ensure that they grow with the child for longer and remain easily adjustable.
