Mountain biking is a new adventure every time – somewhere between experiencing nature, flow and adrenaline. That's exactly what makes the sport so fascinating. At the same time, there is always a certain amount of risk involved. However, if you have the right equipment and know how to protect yourself, you can concentrate fully on the trail and give it your best shot.
The market for MTB equipment is huge, and finding the right setup can quickly become confusing. Nobody wants to have to compromise. iXS brings decades of experience in gravity and racing sports to the table and consistently sets new safety standards – for more confidence, more control and even more fun on every trail.

Why protection is important when mountain biking
Falls and collisions
Roots, rough stones or loose earth – when mountain biking, there are numerous obstacles that can easily throw you off your bike at the wrong moment. Even trees and large rocks along the route can be dangerous. Falls can quickly lead to broken bones and a hospital visit.
Typical MTB injuries
Most injuries are abrasions, bruises or cuts, but more serious injuries often affect the shoulders, arms and hands (wrists and fingers). Downhill riders are particularly prone to rib and collarbone fractures. Ligaments can also be affected.
Some of these injuries – especially to joints and ligaments – can cause long-term damage. Make sure you have the right protection for your next MTB adventure to ride safely and confidently.

Must-have equipment for MTB beginners
If you are new to the trail, it helps to sort MTB equipment into five clear categories:
- Helmet – provides protection for the head and, depending on the model, also guards the face
- Protectors/guards – shield exposed and vulnerable areas such as joints, back, and chest
- Gloves – protect hands from blisters, pressure points, abrasions, and scratches
- Goggles – eye protection from sun, flying debris, stones, and dust
- Clothing: jersey and trousers – comfort and protection while riding

MTB helmets
Helmets protect your head – that much is clear. But not all helmets are the same. Within the helmet category, there are different designs and variable safety concepts. A distinction is made between full-face and open-face helmets. Both offer specific advantages and are suited to different riding styles. A comparison and detailed information can be found here. Either way, riding on the trails without a helmet puts you at serious risk.

The right MTB protectors for every riding style
All protectors serve to protect, but differ depending on their area of application. Enduro protectors do not have to meet the same requirements as downhill protectors. iXS recommends wearing at least knee, elbow, and back protectors for optimum protection on the trail.
Trail riders rely on lightweight, comfortable and ventilated protectors such as the iXS "Flow" series. Flow XTG protectors offer good impact protection, are comfortable and breathable. The Flow upper body protector comfortably protects the back and spine.
Carve protectors offer higher protection but remain lightweight and comfortable. They are suitable for tougher use in enduro riding. The upper body protector protects the back, shoulders, chest, and ribs. Downhill riders who push themselves to the limit need maximum protection. Trigger products enable risk-free riding even under demanding conditions.

Goggles and gloves
When choosing the right gloves, it is advisable to pay attention to comfort and convenience. No friction or pressure points. Otherwise, you may encounter unpleasant surprises after a day of riding. Yes, goggles should look cool, but there are other things to consider besides aesthetics. Top-end models also come with CE certification – a mark of tested safety and durability. Budget glasses are often not certified, which is not necessarily a disadvantage. Nevertheless, look for a sturdy, flexible frame and shatterproof, scratch-resistant lens material that provides reliable protection even in the event of hard impacts.

The perfect fit: choosing the right helmet, protectors and other gear
Sizes
The proof of the pudding is in the eating – at least that's how it works in the shop. But when ordering online, you want to be sure. It helps to take a close look at the size chart.
The right protectors
It is particularly important that protectors fit well and do not slip. Nevertheless, they should not cut into the skin. Bear in mind that protectors are either adjustable or elastic.
Is the helmet the right size?
A good fit is just as important when it comes to helmets. The helmet should not cause any pressure points. If you can fit more than one finger between the helmet shell and your head, the helmet is too big.
Find the right equipment for you
Know your style
The right MTB gear is the basis for safety and riding enjoyment on the trail. Choosing a helmet, protectors and clothing that suit your riding style and ensuring a good fit significantly reduces the risk of injury. This allows you to concentrate fully on the experience and enjoy your mountain biking adventure without any worries.
