Safety on motorcycles:
Is the airbag the new helmet?

Just a few decades ago, many motorcyclists rode without helmets – today, they are an integral part of basic equipment. Airbags could become similarly established in the future: they have the potential to fundamentally redefine the level of safety when riding a motorcycle.

First things first: the airbag is not a replacement for the helmet, but an additional protective measure. The airbag vest sets a new standard in terms of safety.

Similar to a helmet, it protects particularly sensitive areas of the body and is a useful addition to existing protective equipment. The airbag is therefore considered to be the safety equipment of the future.

Motorcycle jackets and trousers already offer a high level of protection against cuts and abrasions. Integrated protectors in exposed areas further reduce the impact forces.

The airbag goes one step further and significantly expands this protection concept: in the event of a fall, the airbag absorbs a large part of the kinetic energy, thus significantly reducing the strain on the body.

Motorcycle airbags – useful for road, off-road and racetrack use?

Whether you're riding on normal roads, off-road, or on the racetrack, there is a specially developed detection mode for every riding style, ensuring maximum protection.

The In&box comes with five different modes. If needed, additional modes can be individually adapted to your specific requirements, providing personalized safety and comfort.

How does a motorcycle airbag work?

The iXS IPRO 1.0 airbag is equipped with three accelerometers and three gyroscopes that perform around 1,000 analyses per second. The system evaluates this data, detects a fall, and deploys the airbag at exactly the right moment, ensuring maximum protection.

Less than 60 milliseconds elapse from the moment of the fall to the complete inflation of the airbag – that is three to four times faster than the blink of an eye.

Once inflated, the airbag effectively protects the upper body during an impact, providing significantly better protection for the chest, spine, and abdomen.

Studies show that airbags reduce fatal injuries in the protected area by around 41%, giving riders enhanced safety and peace of mind.

The iXS Airbag essentially consists of two components: the vest with an integrated airbag system and the In&box, which serves as the control unit.

The vest contains the actual airbag, while the In&box acts as the electronic brain. Using sensors, it analyzes riding data and triggers the airbag in the event of an emergency.

Both components must be purchased separately. The In&box was developed by In&motion, a specialist in airbags, and is available for purchase or lease on their website.

Once deployed: ready for use again in five minutes

One of the key advantages of the airbag vest from iXS and In&motion is that it can be reused after an accident.

All you need to do is order a new inflator, which can be easily installed in just five minutes without any prior knowledge.

The airbag vest can be deployed up to five times in total. After that, it must be sent in for inspection for safety reasons.
